Translate LINE chats on your PC,
and reply in their language.
LINE is how many families, couples and friends in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand keep in touch, including families who message a caregiver from Indonesia or Vietnam. LINE's desktop app can translate a single message when you ask, but LINE doesn't translate chats automatically, so most people copy each message into a translator and back. Liao does that step for you on a Windows PC: every incoming message gets a translation underneath, and what you type is translated when you press Enter.

Why translating LINE is awkward
LINE has phone apps, a desktop app and a browser extension, but no web version you can open in a normal browser tab. That's why many browser translation add-ons don't work on LINE.
LINE's desktop app can translate one message at a time when you choose Translate, but we found no automatic translation of whole LINE chats. People usually do one of three things: copy messages into a translation app on their phone, add a translation bot to the chat, or use a chat translation app on a computer.
The three ways, compared
- Copy and paste on your phone: nothing to install, but you switch apps for every message, and long conversations get slow.
- A translation bot: easy to add to a group, but everyone in the chat sees the translations it posts, and it's clumsy in one-to-one chats.
- A chat translation app on your computer, such as Liao: translations show only on your screen, and the other person simply receives a normal message in their language.
Translate LINE on Windows with Liao, in four steps
- Install Liao on a Windows 10 or 11 PC and sign in with a Liao account. The installer already includes the parts LINE needs, so you don't install LINE separately.
- Click Add account and choose LINE. Each LINE account gets its own separate sign-in.
- Scan the QR code with LINE on your phone, or sign in with the email and password linked to your LINE account. The first time you sign in on this PC, confirm once in LINE on your phone.
- Open a chat. Incoming messages get a translation underneath, in your language. Type your reply in your own language and press Enter to translate it; press Enter again to send.
Writing to someone you care about
- Before you send, read the back-translation: your message turned back into your language, so you can see whether the meaning held up.
- Keep important messages simple: one thing per message, and numbers for amounts and times, such as two tablets or 3 pm.
- When you're not sure how a message will come across, the Liao assistant beside the chat can explain what someone meant or offer a few ways to say it. You always press Send yourself.
Two things to know first
- LINE lets one account be signed in on only one computer at a time. After you sign in through Liao, LINE on another PC may be signed out. LINE on your phone keeps working.
- Liao translates personal LINE chats. You can open a LINE Official Account in Liao, but its messages aren't translated yet.
FAQ
Do I need to install LINE or a browser extension?
No. The Liao installer includes LINE's official desktop extension and what it needs to run. Add a LINE account in Liao and sign in.
How is this different from a LINE translation bot?
A bot sits in the chat and posts translations everyone can see. Liao runs on your own computer, so only you see the translations, and the other person sees the message you send in their language.
Which languages does it translate?
Common languages such as English, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Chinese all work. Incoming messages are translated into your language, which follows the app's interface language by default; you can change it in Settings. The app interface is available in English, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
Will it reply for me?
No. Liao never sends anything on its own. You check each message and press Send yourself.
Is it free?
New accounts get free credit to try it. After that you buy more by the character. There's no subscription, and credit doesn't expire.
