Caring for a parent,
across a language gap.
Many families message a live-in caregiver every day about medicine, doctor's visits and meals, often in a language neither side speaks well. On a Windows PC, Liao translates the caregiver's LINE or WhatsApp messages into your language as they arrive, and translates your instructions when you press Enter. Before anything goes out, you can read the back-translation to check the meaning. You press Send yourself.

The usual options
- Copy and paste into a translation app: fine for a few lines, slow when you send instructions every day.
- A LINE translation bot: handy in a family group where everyone needs to read the translation, since it posts translations into the chat.
- A chat translation app on your computer, such as Liao: translations show only on your screen, and the caregiver receives a normal message in their language. It suits one-to-one chats.
Set it up with Liao
- Install Liao on a Windows 10 or 11 PC and sign in with a Liao account.
- Add the LINE or WhatsApp account you use with the caregiver, and sign in by scanning the QR code with your phone.
- In Settings, set the other person's language for that account to Indonesian, Vietnamese or the caregiver's language.
- Incoming messages get a translation underneath. Type your instruction, press Enter to translate, read the back-translation, and press Enter again to send.
What we saw when we tested it
In mid-October 2026 we translated 12 everyday instructions (medicine, doctor's visits, shopping, pay, days off, checking in) from Chinese into Indonesian and back, and 4 typical caregiver messages from Indonesian into Chinese. We tested Chinese and Indonesian, not English.
- All 12 instructions kept their meaning in Indonesian.
- One quantity changed: a traditional Taiwanese weight unit became half a kilogram. Writing grams avoids this.
- 3 of the 4 caregiver messages came out right. In one, the caregiver's respectful way of addressing the employer was misread, which changed the sentence.
- The same sentence can translate differently at different times, so check the back-translation for anything important.
Tips for clear instructions
- One task per message: medicine, appointments and shopping in separate messages.
- Use numbers: two tablets, 3 pm, 300 grams.
- For medicine and doctor's visits, read the back-translation before sending, and ask again if a reply is unclear.
FAQ
Does the caregiver need to install anything?
No. The caregiver receives a normal message in their language and replies as usual. Their reply is translated on your computer.
Can the whole family use it in a group chat?
Liao's translations show only on your own screen, so it suits one-to-one chats. For a family group where everyone needs to read the translation, a LINE translation bot is more convenient.
Does it work on my phone?
No. Liao is a Windows 10 and 11 app for now.
Is it free?
New accounts get free credit to try it. After that you buy more by the character. There's no subscription, and credit doesn't expire.
